Client Challenges
Following hazard and risk identification planning by Melbourne Airport (owned and operated by Australia Pacific Airports Melbourne Pty Ltd, a need was identified to address the highly polished, slippery ramps across 8 levels of the Terminal 4 car park originally built in 2014.
These ramps had become slippery for drivers and Melbourne Airport wanted to deliver a solution that offered additional grip.
Melbourne Airport concerned about the speed that some drivers reached on these ramps, increasing crash risks.
Melbourne Airport required no shutdown periods and for the ramps to remain operational during the project, requiring Traffic Guidance Schemes (TGS) and detailed Project Plans for all ramps before awarding the contract.
The solution also needed to be a long-lasting one to save maintenance and replacement costs.
Solution
Delivering the fix
OmniGrip High Friction Surface Treatment
Melbourne Airport undertook a thorough due diligence process before choosing OmniGrip HF for the ramps. OmniGrip HF is a 3mm Calcined Bauxite Surface Treatment which was applied to approximately 2,100 m2 in the Terminal 4 Car Park.
The client was provided with evidence that OmniGrip HF complies with all national and state road authority specifications (including VicRoads Specification 430), and is the first high-friction surface treatment to achieve Level 3 TIPES certification in Queensland – the toughest product certification process for road surfaces in Australia.
Custom Operations
This recommendation was made to ensure all work could be conducted at times to ensure the site remained fully trafficable, and this was done by customising the staging of works to suit the client’s needs, meaning no shutdowns occurred at any time.
Rather than wait until the end of the whole project, detailed reports were provided to the client after every shift. These reports included before and after photographs, times that components of the job were completed, and any problems that needed to be rectified.

Impact
At Melbourne Airport, safety and operational efficiency are at the core of our infrastructure decisions.
When faced with the challenge of addressing slippery ramps in the Terminal 4 Car Park, we sought a solution that could significantly enhance skid resistance while maintaining uninterrupted operations. OmniGrip Direct delivered exactly what we needed.
The application of OmniGrip HFST has transformed our car park ramps, improving skid resistance and reducing braking distances. This upgrade not only enhances driver safety but also helps minimize crash risks. The durability of the treatment ensures long-term cost
savings, aligning with our commitment to sustainable and efficient operations.
The results speak for themselves. Our car park ramps are now safer and more reliable, and the project was completed without any interruptions to our operations. OmniGrip HFST has proven to be a game-changing solution for Melbourne Airport, and we would like to thank OmniGrip Direct for their professionalism, expertise, and exceptional results.
