PROJECT
Fitzsimons Lane
Upgrade
Bus, Cycle & Pedestrian Lanes
At the conclusion of an ambitious $5 million upgrade of Fitzsimons Lane, Major Road Projects Victoria and its contractors selected industry-leading, sustainable anti-slip coloured surface treatments using over 23 tonnes of recycled glass to enhance safety and visibility across bus, cycle, and pedestrian lanes—making walking and cycling around the community safer with a durable, low-maintenance finish.

Client Challenge
With the area experiencing high traffic volumes, there was an urgent need to reduce congestion and enhance road safety for all users. The busy intersections in the project scope required upgrades to handle the increasing traffic efficiently. Additionally, introducing priority bus lanes, safer pedestrian crossings, and cycling lanes was essential to support active transportation users and ensure their safety.
BMD Constructions & Major Road Projects Victoria needed a robust solution that addressed these issues while meeting community expectations and maintaining environmental sensitivity. Supported by ecologiQ, which is responsible for increasing the use of recycled materials in major transport infrastructure projects, the clients were intent on identifying ways to use more recycled materials across all major road upgrades, in line with the Victorian Government’s Recycled First Policy.
Given the large project budget and two years of disruption on Fitzsimons Lane, the clients also wanted to use products with a longer Service Life, and which could be installed quickly.
Solution
Delivering the fix
23,000 kg Recycled Glass Used
OmniGrip Direct incorporated 23 tonnes of 1–3 mm, 75% crushed Australian Recycled Glass into the surface treatment, equivalent to recycling 115,000 beer bottles, reducing the project’s carbon footprint.
3,900 m² of OmniGrip CST Installed
Installed across intersections, bus lanes, and cycling lanes in Templestowe, including Porter Street–Fitzsimons Lane and Foote Street–Williamsons Road, to improve visibility and safety.
OmniGrip ReSurface for Medians
Applied to concrete medians to provide a durable, low-maintenance finish and enable construction efficiencies.
Compliant and Collaborative
OmniGrip CST meets VicRoads Section 431 safety standards. Delivered in collaboration with BMD Constructions and EcologiQ, ensuring high performance and environmental responsibility.
Long-Lasting Performance
Meticulous application reduced maintenance needs, minimised community disruption, and improved financial sustainability.
