Vivacity LED Safety Tactiles are making a real difference to how safe people feel walking in the City of Melbourne, Australia, according to a survey.
Market research found that 68% of survey respondents felt that the LED lights in the footpath made them feel extremely safe or somewhat safe.

When asked to select statements that they agreed with, 59% reported that the LED Safety Tactiles are easier to see than the standard pedestrian lantern.
Polar Enviro’s External Affairs Director, Dave Jones, said, “This is an important outcome. Although the trial was initiated for its potential safety benefits for pedestrians distracted by technology, this survey indicates that the broader population benefits from them too.
“As the population ages, vision issues are more likely to increase” Jones said. “The standard red or green man or woman symbol positioned in a traffic signal lantern across the road is actually a small light that can be hard to see. That might be because of the width of the road, competition from other lights and signs, or all these things.
“Anecdotally, we’ve also been told that on a crowded footpath, shorter people find it hard to see ahead and they tend to walk with the crowd. The Vivacity LED Safety Tactile changes with the lights and is much easier to see.”
Major benefits of the LED Safety Tactile are:
- Significantly larger and brighter than traditional pedestrian lanterns on traffic signals
- Positioned ‘near side’ to the pedestrian so it is much easier to see than a small light across the road
- Conforms to the standard design requirements of a Tactile Ground Surface Indicator
- Achievea the 30% contrast requirement of accessibility guidelines and standards.
