Following hazard and risk identification planning by Melbourne Airport (owned and operated by Australia Pacific Airports Melbourne Pty Ltd), a need was identified to address the highly polished, slippery ramps across eight levels of the Terminal 4 car park that were originally built in 2014.
After ten years of use, these ramps had become slippery for drivers and Melbourne Airport need to deliver additional grip. They chose OmniGrip Direct’s High Friction Surface Treatment to significantly improve skid resistance, enhance driver safety and provide a durable, cost-effective solution. OmniGrip Direct was chosen to do the work to ensure no disruptions to the operation of this critical car park occurred while the work was undertaken.
Detailed Results & Impact
The implementation of OmniGrip HF on the Melbourne Airport Terminal 4 Carpark Ramps has yielded significant benefits for car park ramp safety:
- Improved safety by reducing braking distances and the risk of skidding and sliding.
- Crash risk reduction using High Friction Surface Treatments as a safety technology will assist by reducing crashes and the severity of any potential incidents. Elsewhere, comprehensive studies have shown for curves, crash reductions range from 57% to 78.8%, and for wet-road crashes, reductions range from 83.2% to 92.1%.
- Long-term cost savings. OmniGrip HF’s extended lifespan reduces the need for frequent replacements, resulting in significant cost savings over time. This is a sustainable, low-maintenance solution for Melbourne Airport’s car park ramps.
Compliance Testing
Skid resistance and texture depth testing found that the completed OmniGrip HF surface exceeded the requirements of the Victorian Department of Transport & Planning’s Standard Section 430, as well as the tougher requirements of Austroads ATS-3466 for High Friction Surface Treatment.
